Lawfare and its violation of Civil and Political Rights as a consequence of acts of political persecution
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze what lawfare is and how it violates the civil and political rights of individuals. This practice has been used in different countries to combat political leaders and activists, and has become a tool to promote political persecution and limit civil and political rights. In Ecuador, Lawfare has been used as a tool of intimidation and repression of the political opposition. Opposition activists and leaders have been subjected to a series of unfounded accusations in order to limit their ability to mobilize citizens and participate in politics. These actions have included arbitrary detention, censorship, harassment, intimidation and persecution of activists and opposition leaders. As a result of these Lawfare activities, the civil and political rights of the citizenry have been seriously infringed. In addition, Lawfare has allowed the government to implement authoritarian and repressive policies without allowing citizens to exercise their right to participate in decision-making. This has contributed to a decline in democracy and the rule of law in Ecuador.
